WA HOME DESIGN & LIVING: ISSUE 1
This stunning garden area was constructed by Phase3 Landscape Construction in conjunction with Newforms Landscape Architecture, who designed the project. The brief for this project called for a sleek and modern design with high aesthetic value and individuality.
The site’s proximity to the Swan River meant there was a very high water table. The bottom of the pool sits below the water table and as a result had to be designed and engineered accordingly.
The challenge here was to create a larger sense of space in a long and narrow lot. The result presents aesthetically beautiful outdoor areas with strong emphasis on shape, form and function.
The granite water feature was designed with the intention of creating the illusion of space in a small courtyard while concealing a large pumping well which dominated the space. The light box covers a steel manhole leading to a six metre deep pump well to the garage below. The light from the box increases the depth of field of the courtyard creating a more dynamic space experienced inside and outside the surrounding rooms.
The design of the garden is made more interesting through the use of varying levels made from exposed aggregate concrete and travertine tiles – a coupling that adds dimension to the colour scheme.
Because it is a long and narrow space this backyard could be considered small, however, through clever use of high walls and tall textural plants the space has been made to seem bigger than it is. The bamboo in particular is a feature that both complements and enhances the structural nature of the design, while also instilling a sense of harmony and calm into the landscape.
In addition to the landscape brief, the client also requested Newforms Landscape Architecture to include an amendment to the existing façade of the building. This renovation incorporated structural steel sections borrowed from the landscape space, which allowed the two teams to establish a cohesive connection between the existing dwelling and the proposed landscape elements.
